Prompt Challenges
Microfiction Judges & Contestants Wanted
03/31/25 || Last updated 04/09/25
This is not a job offer. There are no prizes, other than membership in a community of readers and writers.
I use the terms "voting," "ranking," and "judging" interchangeably.
People who are not writers but wish to be judges should do the following.
Submit what you consider to be a great sentence. This must be a sentence that does not need other sentences in order for its greatness to be apparent.
Provide an explanation for why you consider your sentence to be a great sentence.
The Prompts Challenges will work as detailed below. If you need further clarification, please contact me by using the help desk.
One set of prompt challenges involves giving writers the same two prompts. Each writer creates one 100-word story per prompt. Other writers then rank the two stories and provide feedback/reasons for their choices. In this scenario, as a writer, you're competing against yourself. You will, more than likely, start with this one. The other set of prompt challenges works as explained below.
Contests will be in groups of five writers. At the most, there may be up to ten. The idea is to prevent the voting from being overwhelming. In each group, only the participants will vote. However, writers will be prohibited from voting for themselves. This means that in a group of five writers, each writer will vote for four people. The voting will consist of ranking the stories from first place to fifth place. I use the terms "voting" and "ranking" interchangeably.
An effort will be made to publish all submissions simultaneously to prevent writers from being influenced by existing posts.
Feedback in the comments sections, which is distinct from voting/ranking, will be available to all writers in the Prompt Challenges group. This means that writers can read and provide feedback to any posted stories. For clarity, all contestants will be part of the Prompt Challenges group. Within the challenges group, writers will be divided into groups of five.
In giving feedback, we will not tell others that they suck, especially if they suck.
I will provide a prompt. The writers will choose their own genres. In my opinion, a great sentence is a great sentence regardless of the genre. I just want to enjoy some great sentences.
I will not be part of any group of five because if I win—yes, there's an "if"—no one will believe I didn't rig the system. What I'll do is write my own little thing from the same prompt and make it available for viewing.
We can get started now, even though my preferred voting system will be fully operational in the third week of April 2025. You may register here and then send your stories to the help desk here. The first prompt can be found here.
